The production of this scan is an outgrowth of meetings of Greater Washington region grantmakers to explore opportunities for working together to accelerate positive changes in the region. The funders group identified the need to build the leadership capacity in the region and collectively decided to commission a scan to better understand the leadership needs and the strengths and limitations of local leadership and capacity building efforts. They partnered with the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, an organization committed to building the strength, visibility, and influence of the nonprofit sector. The Roundtable invited the Leadership Learning Community (LLC) to conduct the scan.

Mission Statement and Connection to Leadership Development:
The Foundation and its partners are working to build a field well resourced with leaders capable of creating better futures for disadvantaged children and families.
Description of Relationship with/Involvement in Leadership Development Work:
We do this work by identifying emerging leaders and improving the skills of managers who can oversee cutting-edge organizations, implement complex system reforms, and lead struggling community-based groups. Our contribution to building a field of leaders seeks to:
- Supply major systems reform and community change efforts with qualified and capable leaders knowledgable in what works to improve outcomes for children and families.
- Strengthen the leadership, organizational capacity, and financial sustainability of public and nonprofit grantees whose work is essential to the Foundation’s mission.
- Support parents and residents across communities as they learn skills and take up leadership roles in the Foundation’s major initiatives.
Organizational Profile Part II
Leadership Development Funding Focus Area:This book provides broad and practical information about how to conduct leadership development evaluations using a variety of approaches, many of which have been recently developed. We have intentionally sought authors from a variety of sectors (nonprofit, academic, for-profit, and governmental agencies) to increase the diversity of perspectives, expertise, and experiences represented in these pages. The target populations and program designs covered in this handbook are also diverse; we believe this book represents a powerful opportunity for cross-program and cross-sector learning. In the rich online companion to the book we offer brief summaries of each of the chapters along with resources for each chapter and links to the resources where possible. This information is available by clicking on the book's section titles or chapter headings. To learn more about the content or ordering the book, visit the companion site now (click on the link below to access the companion site).

The Evaluation Learning Circle engaged interested circle members in an inquiry process to better understand how personal transformation links to organizational, community, and social/systemic change, and how to evaluate it. Eighteen topics for inquiry were proposed. Participants were asked to engage in their own inquiry process over a six month period in advance of our gathering in September. Prior to the meeting, participants were asked to share the results of their inquiry. During the session, we had three conversation catalysts that focused on the benefits of investing in evaluation collaborations for cross-program learning and building the knowledge of the field. Four domains of change, and representative indicators, emerged from our collective responses as well as potential directions for evaluation work and a list of resources. Download the summary document of the process and the session below.
