The Johnson Intern Program

Description:

The Johnson Intern Program invites 8 young adults to a ten-month intern/volunteer experience of social justice, leadership training, intentional community living, and spiritual formation. JIP recruits young adult men and women (college graduates ages 21-30) for ten-month service placements in the Chapel Hill, NC area. Some Americorps positions are available (with educational grants), and a new component explores the role of business in positive social change. Placements start in September and run through June.

The program is organized around four components of social justice, intentional community living, leadership training in the Servant-Leader model, and spiritual formation. Interns work a four-day week in community social justice agencies. Fridays are devoted to our leadership program.

Interns come from a wide variety of places and faith backgrounds. They live in community in the JIP house and create a covenant to guide their experience of living together and opportunities for common meals and devotion. Interns and are expected to volunteer within a spiritual community of their choosing in the area.

Interns are assigned experienced mentors who serve as a friend and guide for their intern year. Each group of interns designs and completes a service project for the year.
