Casey Foundation: What are the key elements of leadership development approaches that are contributing to measurable progress on significant social problems? What evaluation approaches are being used or developed to successfully measure and document the impact of leadership development that results in large-scale change? What opportunities exist to replicate, spread, adapt, or apply lessons from these models to increase the impact of leadership development programming and investments?

Leadership & Collective Impact Report External website [view] [more info]

It is time to ask ourselves if the countless dollars and tremendous effort on the part of dedicated nonprofit leaders are getting us where we need to be. Many would agree that we are falling short of the mark and are not seeing the progress that is sorely needed on any number of serious, complex social problems. In their seminal article, “Collective Impact,” John Kania and Mark Kramer suggest that no single individual or organization can tackle persistent social issues such as the early childhood health outcomes, lowering global carbon emissions or pervasive poverty alone. We need a new way of working together and a new kind of leadership to transcend hierarchical belief systems to bring about a change in how we treat each other as well as our greater global communities and ecosystem.

Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program Vignettes | Ana & Blanca PDF file [download] [more info]

The Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program (MAR Leadership) was launched to unleash talent and support innovative solutions to the degradation of the Mesoamerican Reef System (MAR) as a result of unregulated coastal development, sediment, sewage, overfishing, irresponsible tourism, and broader environmental issues like global climate change. The MAR Leadership Program, in its third year of operation, is testing the hypothesis that leaders across sectors in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras can advance replicable approaches to conservation of the MAR if they are given appropriate support and develop a learning network. The Leadership Learning Community is partnering with MAR Leadership to conduct an evaluation that seeks to provide a timely opportunity to assess the program’s theory of change, determine short-term and intermediate successes, affirm what is working well, and recommend changes to maximize the impact of recruitment, skill building, and network cultivation strategies.

Learning from the Past and Future: Leadership for a New Era PDF file [download] [more info]

The Leadership Learning Community (LLC) believes that it is important to ask ourselves what in our current consciousness about leadership needs to change if we are to tackle the problems that we all care so deeply about. For the past eight years the Leadership Learning Community has engaged hundreds of leadership development funders, program staff and researchers in learning about how to cultivate leadership that is inclusive, rooted in community values, action-oriented and focused on results. We have identified the need for a much broader and more culturally inclusive approach to cultivating and sustaining leadership that focuses on nurturing and supporting teams, networks, and communities; and prepares individuals to lead collectively with others whose leadership cultures and practices differ from their own.
