The Annie E. Casey Foundation hired the Leadership Learning Community to explore the viability of bringing an Evidence Based Practice to the field of leadership development. The foundation in interested in how this approach could scale its leadership work and improve the lives of kids and families. Leadership is recognized as a critical success factor in this process. Currently not much is known about evidence-based practice in leadership work. This eight week investigation and analysis has been divided into two phases. The first phase of research summarized in this papers, studies the development of Evidence-Based Research as a methodology with its origins in the field of medicine.

The Leadership Learning Community (LLC) believes that it is important to ask ourselves what in our current consciousness about leadership needs to change if we are to tackle the problems that we all care so deeply about. For the past eight years the Leadership Learning Community has engaged hundreds of leadership development funders, program staff and researchers in learning about how to cultivate leadership that is inclusive, rooted in community values, action-oriented and focused on results. We have identified the need for a much broader and more culturally inclusive approach to cultivating and sustaining leadership that focuses on nurturing and supporting teams, networks, and communities; and prepares individuals to lead collectively with others whose leadership cultures and practices differ from their own.

A Scan of Leadership Development Efforts in the Greater Washington Region PDF file [download] [more info]

The production of this scan is an outgrowth of meetings of Greater Washington region grantmakers to explore opportunities for working together to accelerate positive changes in the region. The funders group identified the need to build the leadership capacity in the region and collectively decided to commission a scan to better understand the leadership needs and the strengths and limitations of local leadership and capacity building efforts. They partnered with the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, an organization committed to building the strength, visibility, and influence of the nonprofit sector. The Roundtable invited the Leadership Learning Community (LLC) to conduct the scan.

The LLC convened a gathering of 15 recognized Bridge Leaders in Los Angeles. The LLC was asked to host this discussion by 5 California foundations responding to a request from the community in the aftermath of the LA riots. Participants were asked how to cultivate and support bridge leaders.
